Ronan Bennett

Ronan Bennett is an award-winning Irish screenwriter and novelist.

He is the writer, creator, and executive producer of the BAFTA-winning London gangland drama phenomenon TOP BOY. The series received rave reviews from critics and fans alike, becoming one of Netflix’s biggest shows, with Season 4 debuting to 21 million views within its first four days. The fifth and final series debuted to universal acclaim, winning the BAFTA for ‘Best Drama’ in 2024.

Ronan’s most recent series, a contemporary adaptation of DAY OF THE JACKAL for Carnival Films and Sky Studios, directed by Brian Kirk and starring Eddie Redmayne, debuted in November 2024 to huge critical acclaim. The series drew a record audience in its first week, becoming the biggest ever for Sky Original. Ronan has written all ten episodes and executive produces the series.

Ronan’s previous credits include GUNPOWDER starring Kit Harington for BBC One; PUBLIC ENEMIES directed by Michael Mann and starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard; FACE starring Robert Carlyle and Ray Winstone; LUCKY BREAK, a prison escape comedy directed by Peter Cattaneo; and THE HAMBURG CELL.

As an author, Ronan’s work includes the hugely acclaimed THE CATASTROPHIST, shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel Award and the IMPAC Award; and the historical drama HAVOC, IN ITS THIRD YEAR, winner of the Irish Novel of the Year, longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and shortlisted for the IMPAC Award. His latest novel, ZUGZWANG, was serialized over 30 weeks in The Observer. It was shortlisted for the 2008 Irish Book Award and has been translated into 14 languages. His memoir FIRE AND RAIN won a Sony Gold Medal.

Ronan has been a regular contributor to The Guardian, The Observer, The Independent on Sunday, The London Review of Books, The Los Angeles Times, The New Statesman and many other publications, writing on topics as various as the peace process in Ireland, the imprisonment of children in modern Britain, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the contemporary novel, chess and food.

As a producer, Ronan produces his work through his production company Easter Partisan Films.
